FROM THE MIDDLE: Peter Leslie on the recent Big Title Clash at Holm Park

PSP against Rutherglen Glencairn AFC was always likely to be tight with first facing second in the GCFA Premier League.

Referee Peter Leslie was given the game late, but for an experienced official the approach stayed the same.

We caught up with Peter after the match to get his thoughts from the middle.

A Tight Contest

“It was a tight game as expected,” Peter said. “Nothing much between the sides. Both teams gave 100%, and in the end the game was settled by a wonder goal.”

On Late Appointment

“Not really, I treat all games the same way,” he said when asked if the late appointment changed preparation.

“Having been involved in the league for a number of years, I know both teams well and knew it would be a competitive encounter.”

Positioning and Decisions

“Positioning is key in all games,” Peter explained. “It’s important to get the best view of all incidents, especially the key ones so you can make the correct decision.”

“Both teams will always ask for decisions and you need to be able to shut out the noise and be confident in the decision you have made.”

Communication

“Communication is key in all games,” Peter said. “I make a point of talking throughout the game to players of both teams.

“I feel this is a much better approach than putting up a barrier and refusing to talk. I find it helps when explaining decisions and defusing potential flash points.”

The Demands of the Role

“Turning up promptly and preparing properly are essential,” Peter said. “Give the game your undivided attention and be switched on for 90 minutes.”

Referees are part of every big amateur football occasion, and games like PSP against Rutherglen are another reminder of the concentration and composure required in the middle.
