On a bitterly cold evening at Barlia in Castlemilk, Busby AFC and Rutherglen Glencairn AFC met in the Cinema Cup semi-final, both sides arriving full of confidence after strong recent form.

The opening 15 minutes were cagey, with neither team able to stamp authority on the game. That changed when Rutherglen took the lead in unusual fashion—an off-the-ball free kick deflected kindly into the path of their striker, who reacted instantly with a superb first-time finish to make it 1–0.

Rutherglen began to grow into the match. A slick move released Stalker through on goal, but the Busby keeper produced a fantastic save to keep his side in it.

Moments later, Henry beat the offside trap and found himself one-on-one, only to be denied again by another stunning stop from the Simba the Busby shot-stopper.

The pressure continued as a well-worked corner led to another effort on goal, but once again the Busby keeper stood tall, this time denying Smith after some excellent attacking play.

Busby responded with some neat football of their own and felt aggrieved when a last-ditch tackle in the box—one that had strong penalty claims—was waved away by the referee. A volley from Doc flashed just wide, while a dangerous ball to the back post narrowly evaded a Busby head.

Smith remained a constant threat down the Rutherglen right, his direct running causing all sorts of problems. That pressure paid off again when a debatable handball went unpunished, allowing Rutherglen to break quickly. The ball was slipped through to William Stalker, who finished clinically past the keeper to make it 2–0.

Busby came out firing after the break. Within moments, a ball into the box fell kindly to John Dempster, who showed great composure to slot home and reduce the deficit to 2–1.

Rutherglen nearly responded immediately, with Smith racing through on goal, only to fire narrowly wide. Busby kept pushing—number 11 came close with a flicked header and then a volley that just cleared the bar.

Despite Busby’s growing momentum, McKay and the Rutherglen defence held firm with a number of their back four making crucial interventions.

Then came a pivotal moment: a Busby shot struck a Rutherglen hand, but play continued. Rutherglen broke at pace and punished the appeals, finishing clinically to restore their two-goal cushion at 3–1.

Things quickly went from bad to worse for Busby. Straight from the restart, a lapse in concentration allowed William Stalker in again, and he made no mistake from close range to make it 4–1.

To their credit, Busby refused to fold. A poor back pass from Rutherglen gifted John Dempster a chance, but his effort was heroically cleared off the line by McKay of Rutherglen.

Soon after, number 16 Ryan McLean picked the ball up in midfield and unleashed a powerful low strike into the bottom corner to make it 4–2.

With around 15 minutes remaining, Busby pushed hard. McLean came close again, firing inches wide, while a long ball forward saw the Rutherglen keeper produce a solid save.

Rutherglen remained dangerous on the counter, but Noon marshalled the Busby back four well. At the other end, the Rutherglen keeper pulled off a stunning save to deny John Dempster, whose header looked destined for the net after a brilliant cross.

The final stages saw half chances for both sides, but neither keeper was seriously troubled as the game drew to a close.

Busby will look at a few big decisions that did not go their way but they can walk away with their heads help high after tonight’s performance.

Man of the Match: Simba (Busby AFC)

David Kempton – Busby AFC

An outstanding performance from the Busby goalkeeper. Despite conceding four, Simba was exceptional throughout—pulling off a string of tremendous saves and commanding his area with authority. His vocal presence and shot-stopping kept Busby in the contest far longer than it might have been otherwise.
