Despite taking an early lead, Anton feeding Zander, who crossed low for Cammy to finish, the islanders will be the first to concede that they didn’t play the conditions well today.

Swirling winds at Glasgow Green made it tricky, but their opponents, Bishopton, used the weather to their advantage, firing high balls into the box, causing havoc and leading to two quick goals to turn the game on its head.

Missing key players in defence and attack, GI toiled at both ends of the park, but when you’re not playing well you also need refereeing decisions to go you’re way.

The whistler, who won’t want to see a highlights package of today’s action, waved away two penalty claims when Zander was tripped, the first so blatant that you could clearly hear the contact from the touchline.

Bishopton extended their lead from a dubious free kick, but credit has to be given for a gorgeous ball whipped into the box. It was begging to be nodded home and duly was. 3-1

Two goals down and a mountain to climb for the islanders, whose makeshift defence struggled to cope with the awkward Bishopton forwards, Jack making one excellent saves to keep the game alive.

Things descended to farce after a bad challenge on Daniel, who was booked himself minutes later for a tackle which seemed born of frustration. The Bishopton centre half lost control, striking Daniel in the face, and seeing an inevitable red card. In the resulting melee, the ref booked several Bishopton players.

Despite a numerical advantage, GI couldn’t create any clear chances, though Ross Macdonald’s dribbling caused problems.

Bishopton were reduced to nine when their forward, unluckily in my opinion, received a second yellow for a challenge.

Unfortunately with the islanders pressing forward, the workhorse Bishopton striker galloped clear and made it 4-1.

A messy end to the game, it was a relief when the ref blew for full time.

Final score: Glasgow Island 1-4 Bishopton
