Referee Sandy Thomson shared his view after Motherwell Villa’s match with Inter Inchinnan, reflecting on the impact of the weather, game control, and player conduct.

On the game overall in the conditions

“I thought the game was ruined with the weather in all honesty. It seemed like two teams who would have played some nice football had the weather not been as severe. Although there was some good quality throughout the game I did feel for the players as the game had a big impact on the game.”

On the game at 2–2 late on

“I felt Inter were in the ascendancy a bit and Motherwell struggled to get into certain positions because of the wind so had to carry the ball a long way to create any chances. They did have a big chance to make it 3-3 but the player hit his shot narrowly wide.”

On any difficult moments to manage

“Not really. The weather and movement of the ball was the hardest factor but the players were spot on and easy to referee.”

On what he takes into the next fixture

“The level of respect you should expect from teams. Players will never not moan or argue their case but when two teams focus on the game and not on the ref it usually means a better experience for all.”

A game shaped heavily by the conditions, but one that stayed under control throughout.

Credit to both sides for how it was played, even when the football itself was difficult.

And from the middle, that’s what matters — keeping the game flowing despite everything around it.
