GDSFC Division Two — Inside Verdict: David Kelly on Inter Inchinnan’s 3–2 win and dealing with the conditions
Inter Inchinnan goalkeeper David Kelly spoke after a 3–2 win over Motherwell Villa, giving a detailed view from the back in tough conditions.
On the conditions and first half challenges
“The conditions today for myself in that first half particularly were horrendous, there was a shot early on that got caught by the wind and took it out of my hands and I had to palm it to the side, luckily their striker was offside and I knew then it was going to be a difficult half for myself and the back 4 however I believe we all dealt with it excellently.”
On how the wind affected his decision-making
“It affected my decision making massively as from the start I was more inclined to go long with my kicks as their two strikers were marking our centre halves but due to the wind they weren’t going particularly far anyway and still causing us bother so I said to my defence to drop into my box from my kicks as we might as well try and play out as best we can because we’re getting penned in by the wind anyway. Positioning wise I usually try and sit high so I can be ready for balls over the top but in these conditions I tended not to do that as much.”

At 2-2 all I’m thinking is to be prepared to fling myself in front of everything that comes my way and telling my defence to do the same. With the wind in our favour this half I tried my best to kickstart any counter attack as quickly as possible to hopefully catch Motherwell Villa off guard.”
On key moments in the match
“There were two saves in the first half which I thought were massive for us as we were 1-0 down at this point and if we had went into half time 2 down it would have been a huge ask for us to have pulled it back from that point. Their number 9 was one on one with me and I managed to shut him down quickly and get the block in and again he managed to get in behind our centre half for a header which luckily I managed to knock over the bar.”

On what the result means
“It’s a huge result for us both in a league standpoint and for confidence around the team. Motherwell Villa are a really good side who are up there challenging with ourselves for promotion so to say that we’ve managed to claim maximum points against them this season is massive for us and I hope it gives us a big boost going into the final few months of the season.”

From the back, this was about dealing with everything the game threw at them.
Inter Inchinnan managed the conditions, made key moments count, and got over the line.
Season still alive in the promotion race — and in weather like that, it’s about getting through it.
