Giffnock SC 40s v Weir Recreation 40s

Match review

The game took place on a cold, miserable morning at Scotstoun after the home side Weir Recreation had offered a 9am kick-off, which was agreed by both clubs.

Giffnock soccer centre 40s started the game well as they took control of the opening five minutes and looked to take the game to the opposition.

Weirs, however, were certainly not going to be pushovers. They looked to play direct with a ball over the top, but Healy made a key tackle to stop what looked like a certain shot on goal.

As the first half wore on the game began to turn into more of a battle. Giffnock’s Duff and Weirs’ Summers were going head-to-head in an old-school physical contest in the middle of the park.

GSC nearly took the lead when another neat move saw Scott and McKeown combine to send Neeson in on goal. The marauding full-back struck his shot well but could only watch as the ball cannoned off the post.

Murray Husband – Giffnock 40s

Giffnock had Husband to thank shortly afterwards when a speculative effort from Sweeney looked destined for the top corner, but the GSC number one had other ideas and produced a superb save.

Another chance fell to Willie Stewart when a clever flick by McKeown sent the striker into the box at a tight angle. Stewart’s powerful effort flashed just wide of the inside post.

Weirs’ direct play then began to put the Giffnock defence under increasing pressure and this time that pressure paid off. Trouten was running towards the GSC goal when Healy appeared to make a great tackle, but the match official pointed straight to the penalty spot.

GSC captain Duff was then shown a yellow card for remonstrating with the referee over what many felt was an extremely soft penalty decision

The Weirs’ number seven, Kevin McInally, stepped up and fired the ball beyond Husband to give the home side the lead.

Giffnock refused to dwell on the setback and responded almost immediately. Moments later they were given a route back into the match after McKeown was fouled on the edge of the box. Midfield maestro McGinnis stepped up and curled a magnificent effort into the top corner, leaving Boyle helpless. 1–1!

For the next few minutes the game resembled a basketball match, with play raging from end to end and neither side able to fully take control.

Visiting full-back Barry Doherty then took matters into his own hands, embarking on a powerful 40-yard run into the penalty area before being illegally brought down by a Weirs defender.

Midfielder Kevin Gallagher took responsibility, his bright yellow boots standing out as he calmly fired the penalty low into the bottom corner to put Giffnock into the lead.

Kev Gallagher in action

The final moments of the half were uneventful as Giffnock tightened their shape and Weirs ensured they did not concede another before the break.

HT – Weir Recreation 40s 1 – 2 Giffnock Soccer Centre 40s

The half-time team talk from GSC was positive, with the message clear: go and secure the three points.

At the break GSC turned to the bench, with striker Matthew Gribben coming on to replace Given after a solid 45-minute shift.

The big striker made an instant impact when a Weirs defender attempted to outmuscle him early on, only for Gribben to simply swat him aside.

Duff then made another strong but fair challenge, though opposition players attempted to influence the referee into giving the big defender a second yellow card.

Match Action

The game continued to ebb and flow, with neither team able to stamp full authority on proceedings.

GSC goal scorer Gallagher had run his race after an excellent 60-minute shift and Ross Hamilton came on in his place.

Giffnock created another opportunity when Stewart burst free and slid the ball across to McKeown. The midfielder perhaps should have shot, but instead tried to be unselfish and find Gribben, only for a Weirs defender to produce a sensational last-ditch challenge.

Match Action

The match remained on a knife edge, as a goal for either side would be crucial. However, clear chances were limited and neither goalkeeper was being seriously tested.

GSC freshened things up again with the introductions of Wilson and Rookie for Duff, who had been a rock at the back, and Stewart, who had run himself into the ground.

In truth, Giffnock had begun to settle for the victory, but Weirs were not content to accept defeat and began to pile on the pressure with a series of free kicks and corners.

Healy at the heart of the Giffnock defence was particularly impressive, heading and kicking away anything that entered the penalty area.

A breakaway from the visitors saw Hamilton and Scott combine before McKeown fired a shot straight at the Weirs goalkeeper.

Match Action

Then came a sting in the tail for Giffnock with only minutes remaining. A sloppy free kick was conceded and the resulting shot from distance was deflected behind for a corner.

The home side delivered an excellent ball into the box which took out Husband, and unfortunately for GSC Glackin was free to fire home from close range. 2-2 !!!!!!

GSC tried to respond immediately. A McKeown free kick found Hamilton at the back post and the midfielder headed the ball towards goal. The Weirs keeper managed to palm it away, with Hamilton quickest to react and fire the ball home — but celebrations were cut short as the referee blew for offside.

The away side threw everything at Weirs in an attempt to regain the lead, but nothing seemed to come off and all hope appeared lost until they won a corner kick with seconds remaining.

Midfielder Anthony McKeown stepped up and delivered a tremendous cross into the mixer. Super-sub Hamilton rose highest above his marker and powered a header into the back of the net, sparking scenes of delirium on the GSC touchline.

Seconds later the referee blew the full-time whistle, bringing to an end a match that had produced an absolutely unbelievable final six minutes.

FT – Weir Recreation 40s 2 – 3 Giffnock Soccer Centre 40s

Weirs will feel hard done by, but the grit and determination shown by Giffnock proved decisive as GSC 40s headed home with a well-deserved three points.

MAN OF THE MATCH – John Healy

John Healy – MOTM

A commanding performance at the heart of defence earns John Healy today’s Man of the Match for Giffnock Soccer Centre 40s.

The central defender was top drawer from start to finish, organising the back line and reading the game superbly. Although he was unfortunate to be involved in the penalty incident, Healy showed real character to bounce back immediately and remain a key figure in the club’s victory.

Time and again he stepped up when it mattered most — producing crucial interceptions, strong tackles, and vital clearances to keep the opposition at bay.

A true leader at the back and a performance that set the standard for the team.

Rock solid. Composed. Decisive.

👏 Well deserved, John Healy.
