Glasgow Island’s Archie McNicol Reflects on Premier League Cup Quarter-Final Victory
Following Glasgow Island’s 4–2 win over Corinthians in the Premier League Cup quarter-final at Scotstoun, Footy Focus caught up with Archie McNicol to get his perspective on the performance and the team’s approach during a competitive tie.
The match was another example of the level of football being played across the GCFA Premier Division, with both teams showing quality, intensity and a willingness to compete throughout the ninety minutes.
On the overall performance in the 4–2 win
“I thought it was a strong performance from the whole squad today. Aside from the first 10 minutes — when we were a bit wasteful with our chances and slightly slow to react to second balls — I felt we controlled the game well and limited a very good Corinthians side to very few opportunities.”

On the team’s response after going a goal behind
“The lads in the middle of the park really got to grips with the game after that first goal. We all know how good a team Corinthians are and if you give them space to play you’re in trouble.
The two Robbie’s and Crawford grabbed the game by the scruff after that early setback and we never looked back.”
On the challenge Corinthians posed
“You always know you’ll get a good honest battle against Corinthians. They never stop playing and as we tired those spaces appeared and you started to see the strength they have as a team going forward.
I don’t think at any point the win was in danger after it went 4–1, but we all know what amateur football can be like.”

On the key moment in the match
“I think the big turning point in the game was Corinthians’ early goal. We had created a few good chances ourselves prior to it and not quite been able to bury them.
The focus and energy in the team completely shifted in that moment and we got our foot on the ball and dominated possession and chances from there.”
On the semi-finals ahead
“We’re a confident squad and there’s a real buzz in the changing room. It’s great to have a bunch of lads in there who are all willing to put in the shift for each other.
I’m always confident in each and every one of the boys in that changing room and we’ll keep driving forward as a team and see what happens.”
