Glasgow Island Captain Reflects on Premier League Cup Quarter-Final Victory

Following Glasgow Island’s 4–2 win over Corinthians in the Premier League Cup quarter-final, Footy Focus caught up with captain Finlay Anderson to get his perspective on the match and what it means for the squad moving forward.
The tie was another strong example of the quality and competitiveness that continues to define the historic and thriving GCFA Saturday morning league.
On the challenge Corinthians posed
“It was a tough game. Corinthians play good football and are always a tough side to come up against, so we knew we had to work hard for the result.”
On responding after going a goal behind
“They’re a very good counter-attacking team, and we had to stay patient after going a goal down. Once we settled into the game and started keeping the ball better, we were able to build some momentum and take the inevitable chances.”

On the team’s defensive discipline
“It was vital. Corinthians always work hard and have very strong attacking threats, so it was important that we kept the back line compact and made sure the midfield helped defensively as well.”
On standout performances
“There were too many strong performances to pick out just one man of the match. Big Angus was brilliant up front and got his reward with two well-taken goals, while Robbie Whyte was a focal point in midfield and commanded the middle of the park, as he always does.”
On reaching the semi-finals
“It’s a great tournament with very strong opponents, so reaching the semi-finals is a real testament to the team’s hard work and commitment. Now we want to keep pushing and see how far we can go.”

The victory sends Glasgow Island into the semi-finals of the Premier League Cup, but the match itself also highlighted the strength of the GCFA Premier Division — a competition where quality sides continue to push each other every Saturday morning.
