After weeks of building up and having Sunday night training sessions the big day is finally arrived.

With some negotiations about the when and where this first fixture of the season would take place it was decided today was the best day.

Unfortunately for everyone concerned you cannot guarantee the weather and today’s conditions were far from ideal.

A wet and blustery afternoon at Nethercraigs did little to dampen the spirits of Giffnock SC as they opened their Over 40s league campaign in emphatic fashion, producing a ruthless attacking display to sweep aside Young Boys of Partick.

Giffnock 40s warming up

Giffnock, resplendent in all purple, started sharply and wasted little time stamping their authority on the match.

The breakthrough arrived early when a beautifully delivered corner found Marty rising highest in the box. His powerful header flew past Paton in the YBOP goal to make it 1–0 and set the tone for what was to come.

In midfield, TC was already pulling the strings, using his experience to find pockets of space and dictate the tempo. Giffnock’s second soon followed. McIntyre whipped in an inviting cross and Lorn met it with a deft glancing header that nestled into the bottom corner. At 2–0, the home side were in full flow.

The left flank was becoming a constant source of danger, with PJ and Crosbie combining well. Around the half-hour mark PJ beat his man before slipping the ball to McIntyre, who teed up Crosbie for a superb strike from the edge of the box. Three up and cruising.

The fourth goal had a touch of route-one brilliance about it. Duff launched a long ball forward which was expertly flicked into Gibson’s path. The striker took one touch and drilled a low finish beyond the helpless keeper.

Giffnock were playing scintillating football now, and Gibson wasn’t finished. Soon after, a clever pass released him again and he calmly rounded the goalkeeper to complete his hat-trick and make it five.

Neeso, charging up and down the flank like a young Cafu, then delivered a teasing cross into the box. Crosbie reacted quickest, producing another clinical low finish to send Giffnock into the break with a commanding 6–0 lead.

The second half began with a raft of GSC substitutions to spread minutes through the squad.

Matty nearly made an instant impact from the bench, striking the crossbar after a sharp turn and shot.

Young Boys of Partick did manage a response when their experienced forward latched onto a ball in behind and coolly rounded the keeper to make it 6–1.

The changes briefly disrupted Giffnock’s first-half rhythm, but they soon reasserted control. Rookie showed good awareness to find space and slip a neat pass through for Givy, who tapped home from close range to restore the six-goal cushion at 7–1.

Paton in the YBOP goal produced a sensational save to deny Marty from distance, while Givy later fired over when chasing an eighth.

Late on, substitute Kenny Wilson made an important interception moments after coming on, and Healy showed sharp reactions to clear off the line as Partick searched for another consolation.

The final opportunity fell to McIntyre, who rose like a salmon to meet PJ’s cross but saw his header drift just wide.

Shortly after, the referee brought proceedings to a close with both sides showing good spirit in the post-match handshakes.

A dominant opening-day performance from Giffnock SC Over 40s, full of sharp finishing and attacking intent — a statement win to start the season.
