In this GDSFC Division 2 fixture, Paul Richards reflects on managing a match that shifted sharply in the second half, the importance of applying the laws consistently regardless of the scoreline, and the unseen demands referees face before the first whistle is blown.

From a referee’s point of view, what are the main challenges when a game becomes very one-sided, and how do you approach managing that?

East end started well and 3-0 down at half time didn’t reflect how the game was played in the 1st half, Chandlers had fresh legs in the second half and this showed with 3 quick goals.
Frustration got the better of the home team and limited subs didn’t help.
As a Ref you need to keep the standards the same as it was a Tighter score line.

How important is communication in matches like this — both with players who are on top and those who are under pressure?

Chandlers felt at times I was feeling sorry for Eastend with a few offside whistles Communication is key, especially to protect the game and not the score line in games like this, implement the same laws of the game throughout the 90 minutes.

Was there anything you felt was handled particularly well by the players despite the scoreline — discipline, respect, or game management?

Chandlers stayed respectful and disciplined within themselves and to opposition.

You made it to the fixture after coming straight from work — how demanding is that side of refereeing, and how do you mentally switch into match mode?

Honestly? That’s one of the hardest part of refereeing that The players rarely see.
I had time in the 40 min car journey to mentally prepare. Once you’ve put your whistle, cards etc in your pocket you get in zone and ready to go.

Looking back now, what do you take away from this game as a referee?

Despite the score line and a little frustration from the home team towards the end it was a good game of football. I was pleased with my decision making and players are made aware without AR’s they need to remember it’s the man in the middles view of the game.

Referee voices matter — especially in games where management, not moments, defines the afternoon.

More From the Middle features coming soon as Footy Focus continues its Referee Corner feature.
