You can always tell when the manager is struggling to raise a squad when he asks me to take my boots with me. Fortunately I didn’t make it onto the pitch as Glasgow Island battled Knightswood, niggly opponents who had inflicted a last-minute defeat on the islanders in their first match of the season.

Saturday was the Premier League Cup rather than the league, and revenge was the order of the day, but it was Knightswood who took an early lead, pouncing on a missed clearance from Jake at a corner. 1-0 Knightswood!!!

Chances came and went for Glasgow Island, Crawford shooting wide, the Knightswood keeper making a great save from a powerful header, and Michael blazing over after Jacob had hit the post.

But redemption was also a theme for the day, Jake playing a sublime 50 yard cross-field pass which took the Knightswood left back out of the game.

Daniel took a glorious first touch and finished with aplomb, curling a low shot into the far corner for the equaliser.1-1 !!!!!!

The islanders pressed for a second, Crawford and Jacob having shots blocked before a cracking diving header from Daniel was well saved.

At the other end, Jack did so well to keep the ball out when the Knightswood striker was clean through.

All square at the break, the referee, who I thought had an excellent game and largely kept his cards in his pocket, booked the visiting centre half for a bad foul.

The two wee Knightswood wingers, who looked as through they could buy clothes in the kids section, did nothing to stifle this rumour by throwing their toys well out of the pram.

Jack made another superb save, the Knightswood centre forward turning well in the box and getting a good shot off.

The same centre forward let himself down a few minutes later, rightly seeing yellow for an dive in the box. The premier league this is not, pal!

He was chasing an equaliser, as GI had taken a well deserved lead, Anton smashing the ball home from two yards after a stramash following a dangerous inswinging corner. 2-1 !!!

Jake had a curling shot just past the post as the islanders sought a clinching third, and it duly came, tenacious work from Zander, who was a menace to the visiting defence throughout, finding young Jacob, who drilled his shot low and hard past the keeper. 3-1 !!!!

A superb finish from the 17 year old, who played so well for 90 minutes and had two more chances late in the game to add to his tally.

But it finished 3-1, Glasgow Island marching into the next round of the cup.

Final score: Glasgow Island 3-1 Knightswood
