We’ve already covered Stefan Bortkiewicz’s thoughts and John Tierney’s hat-trick in our Inside Verdicts, and Muirend keep sending more. This captain’s piece sits alongside them — another part of the picture.

Name: Nick Stewart (Disco)
Team: Muirend Athletic
Team captain
What does being captain mean to you?
Being captain means leading by example, encouraging the rest of the boys, and keeping Cammy as far away from the referee as possible.
How would you describe your team’s identity or playing style?
We play out from the back when we can, try and get our fullbacks up the pitch and if all else fails hit mich up top with the long ball.

Who are the players to watch in your squad?
Plenty great players in the team but would have to give a mention to new recruit Aldo.
How do you motivate the lads before a game?
Nothing major from myself, the lads are always right up for it and I leave the motivational team talks to the gaffer.

Funniest or most vocal player in the dressing room?
We have our fair share of would be comedians at Muirend, our Keeper Jack is definitely the most vocal out on the pitch.
What’s been your proudest moment as captain so far?
Winning our first knockout tie as a club in the west cup this year against a team from the division above.

What keeps you passionate about playing amateur football?
Would have to say mainly my teammates, unfortunately the results don’t always go our way but we have a laugh at the pub after the game.
I named you my man of the match for an outstanding captain’s performance. You’re not a shouter or an aggressive type — you lead by example, keep going, and win your own battles. Did you feel you had a superb second half personally?
Yeah that was probably my best half of football this season, managed to find myself in good positions and as the game went on found more space and time on the ball.

And who did you feel Man of the match
Hard to look past John Tierney for my MOTM after his hat trick

Unfortunately no exciting story for that one. We used to have a few ‘Nicks’ at the club so we needed new names, since my surnames Stewart I ended up with Disco stu after the Simpsons character 😂

Our reporter saw the turnaround, the club sent the context, and the captain’s influence made this worth its own space. Simple as that — Muirend Unleashed in full flow.
