This week’s instalment of the Island view brings us an eic seven goal thriller.
A first meeting between Glasgow Island and Camby Milan started in foggy conditions, the players emerging from challenges like ghostly apparitions.
The islanders played some beautiful football through the mist, but fell behind to a freak goal, though credit should be given to the Camby forward for attempting an audacious chip from the touchline which sailed over Jack before dipping viciously a la Hagi in World Cup 94 against Colombia.
Islands v MilanIslands v MilanRobbie was tenacious in midfield, winning numerous challenges he had no right to. Archie threatened nonstop, and after a disallowed goal from an offside which looked extremely tight, he cut inside the excellent Camby left back and drilled the ball home for the equaliser. The host’s keeper was having a blinder and made several notable saves to prevent GI scoring again.
With the pressure mounting and half time approaching, Camby gave the ball away cheaply in midfield and Archie was sent clear. Although he was at least 3 yards ahead of the last defender, the ref (who, to his credit, admitted at the break that he’d gotten it badly wrong) blew for offside. As the islanders licked their wounds, Camby rubbed salt in by almost immediately scoring from the edge of the box with the last kick of the half.
Islands v MilanIslands v MilanInto the second 45, and the worst possible start for GI as Camby scored with a long distance shot, a lovely clean strike. Archie dragged the islanders back into the game, fashioning space for a shot in the penalty box and finding the top corner. 3-2 and it was game on.
The Camby centre defender, booked earlier for kicking out at Archie from behind after the ball had gone, was exceptionally fortunate not to receive at least another yellow for cleaning out Robin with a leading elbow. There was no card issued, but justice was done when Danny smashed the ball home after the Camby defence couldn’t handle Archie’s fierce free kick.
Islands v MilanIslands v MilanThe next goal was going to be crucial, and with Calum, who was outstanding, and Anton linking well down the left flank, more chances came, the best of which fell to Zander, who made no mistake from six yards to give GI the lead. There was still time for the Camby centre half to let his teammates down and complete an unwanted hat trick of cowardly challenges, kicking Jack in the head and seeing red. Kris made a fantastic last ditch block in the final minute to preserve the slender GI lead, and when the ref whistled full time, there was no doubt that the visitors were worthy winners.
