We take a look at how the Premier League is shaping up after the opening couple of months of the season.

Park Sports Project are top, and reigning champions Corinthians are two points behind but Glasgow Island, Rutherglen, Nethercraigs and Toryglen Thistle aren’t far behind with either games in level to ho top or at least level

As the Premier League moters on, football writer Hugh Dunnitt assesses the early state of play in the title race.

We are only eight matches into the 2025/26 Premier League season but already the title race is shaping up to be a classic.

Here, we take a look at what has happened so far, and explain why the next few rounds of fixtures will have a huge impact on the destination of the trophy.

What we’ve learned so far: Corinthians are favourites but a massive race is likely

Corinthians are one of the early front-runners, sitting only 2 points behind PSP at the top of the table. The reigning champions have won the Premier League two out of the last three seasons.

PSP sit two points clear at the top of the table at the moment and did win the league back in 2023/24. If the former champions can keep up their good form then they are certainly in with a fighting chance

Rutherglen Glencairn AFC

Rutherglen Glencairn are the team everyone should be watching right now.

While Park Sports Project is sitting on top, Rutherglen has only played six games. Their 15 points from six matches gives them the best winning percentage in the league.

Crucially, they’ve got two games in hand on the top spot. If they can turn those into wins—and based on their form, you’d bet on them to do it—they would vault right up to 21 points. That would put a comfortable gap between them and the rest of the pack, making them the clear, runaway favourites for the title.

⚔️ The Gathering Storm Below

The real chaos, however, lies in the mid-table. Teams 4 through 8—Nethercraigs AFC, Glasgow Island, Toryglen Thistle, Bishopton FC, and Rossvale Huntershill—are all locked within a tight 3-point margin, all with 12 points.

Glasgow Island

Glasgow island

have only played 5 games, making their 12 points a monumental return and their +14 goal difference the league’s best.

They are the potential volcano waiting to erupt and reshape the top four.

Nethercraigs AFC sits in the vital 4th spot, leveraging their consistent performance over 7 games.

📈 The Storyline: Pressure Cooker

The title race isn’t about two teams; it’s a tiered contest. Park Sports Project have the lead, but the pressure is immense. They have played more games than Rutherglen Glencairn and Glasgow Island and Toryglen Thistle, three high-performing teams who could quickly close the gap and steal the top spot.

The next few fixtures will be season-defining:

1. Can Park Sports Project maintain their position at the top of the table when the schedule dictates a clash with one of the teams with games in hand?

2. Will Corinthians‘ disciplined defence be enough to keep pace with the goal-scoring prowess of the leaders?

3. How quickly will Rutherglen Glencairn and Glasgow Island cash in their games in hand, and what damage will they do to the teams above them when they do?

The battle for the league crown is still wide open, a thrilling three-way contest that could easily become a five-horse race by the end of the month. Every goal, every clean sheet, and every single point matters now more than ever.
