Banknock Battles Back for East of Scotland Cup Glory in Edinburgh Thriller
Late Show Sinks Uni as Banknock AFC Progress to Second Round

Edinburgh, October 18th – Banknock AFC pulled off an impressive 4-1 victory over Edinburgh University at Peffermill Park on Saturday, overcoming a sluggish start to comfortably book their place in the Second Round of the East of Scotland Cup.
The win was a testament to the team’s resilience, sparked by a trio of fantastic goals and a dominant second-half performance after falling behind early in the match. The full-time scoreline perhaps flatters Banknock slightly, but it was a well-deserved victory that highlighted the side’s clinical edge.
Match Report: The Early Scare and the Great Response
Banknock arrived in the capital seemingly not quite awake for the 3 PM kick-off, as the Edinburgh Uni boys pounced on a lack of desire in the opening stages. The Uni side looked sharp and were arguably the better team for the first 25 minutes, eventually taking the lead with a deserved goal from a set piece.
However, the scare was the wake-up call the squad needed. Nerves were soon settled when a perfectly weighted through ball from Strithic found Ryan, who calmly rounded the keeper for a cool finish to level the score.
The momentum shift was immediate. Just before the break, Isaac continued his phenomenal run of form, benefiting from excellent work down the left by Strithic. Isaac’s “very cute finish” made it 2-1, giving Banknock a crucial lead going into the interval.
Second Half Stunners Seal the Deal
If the first half was a battle, the second was a masterclass in clinical finishing.
After the Uni briefly threatened an equalizer, Ben stepped up with a spectacular response that will surely be a contender for Goal of the Season. Receiving the ball 30 yards out, Ben unleashed a shot that caught the keeper completely off guard, finding the back of the net with a “lovely finish” that almost rivaled Alex’s stunning goal from last week.
The victory was cemented by substitute Chris, who came on to make a decisive impact. He did “very well” to connect with a cross, sending a looping header over the Uni keeper to wrap up the scoring at 4-1.
Man of the Match: Toni Towers at the Back
While the attacking players—Foxy, Ben, Chris, and Isaac—rightly grabbed the goals, the bedrock of the victory was at the back. Toni was singled out by the club as the Man of the Match, praised for an “absolutely outstanding” performance.
Isaac’s purple patch continues, racking up another goal and an assist, while the team will be buzzing over Ben’s long-range wonder goal.
The Banknock boys now march on to the Second Round where they have been drawn against Stenhousemuir. The club also wished their opponents well, crediting Edinburgh Uni as a “decent bunch of guys” and wishing them a good rest of the season.
