Was there a moment — a goal, a challenge, or even a bit of sportsmanship — that stood out to you?

Without doubt, Gavin Maclean’s hat trick of penalty kicks and scoring another goal.

How did you find the attitude of both teams on the day?

I In such a competitive and hard fought game, there will inevitably be disagreement and things said and done in the heat of the moment, myself included. Both team managers, Dunky and Ahmed, are always a pleasure to work with and this continued today.

Toughest part of managing a game like this?

Physical and mental fitness and concentration has to be 100% full on accurate in order to be in the right place to make credible and accurate judgements. None more so than the award of 3 penalty kicks.

If you could send one message to players or coaches about how to make your job easier, what would it be?

Work together as one and be respectful to each other. I like talking with players and officials during the course of a match, such as complimenting a goal, a save or how bad my decision making is!

Sometimes the “I’ve got as many decisions right as I’ve got hair on my head” has lightened the mood considerably!

Refereeing isn’t just about control; it’s about connection. Somers proved that again here — sharp, fair, and human through a match that had just about everything.
