Queen’s Park SFC 1 – 3 Rosebank Utd

Rosebank United’s 3-1 win at Queen’s Park SFC would’ve been a solid enough story on its own — but few expected to see their 53-year-old manager, Colin Stevenson, lace up and take to the pitch.

With squad numbers stretched and a late injury crisis forcing his hand, Stevenson swapped his match-day blazer for a numbered shirt — much to the disbelief (and laughter) of the sidelines.

An early injury led to sub number 1 being used far quicker than anticipated. Fresh legs were then needed with 20 minutes to go, so sub number 2 made his appearance. Things seemed to be going according to plan, and the team was looking fairly comfortable at 3-1. But with the clock winding down and Rosebank holding onto their two-goal advantage, a head injury to a Rosebank player meant there was no option but for the old guy to take his place in the midfield.

The 53-year-old gaffer chucked the big coat and pulled on a shirt — cue a few smirks from the sidelines and some raised eyebrows all round.

Stevenson, long retired from his playing days, stepped on to the park to help his team see it through. His only job was to steady things and see out the final few minutes — which he did with a calm touch or two that drew a few surprised smiles from both sides.

“There’s no way that old **** should be getting that many touches”.

Stevenson just smiled — fair enough, he thought. He enjoyed a few tidy touches before the next break up the park reminded him how long it’s been. By that point, the Rosebank bench were more amused than worried, and the final whistle came at just the right time.

In his post-match interview, Stevenson said he was delighted with the efforts of his depleted squad and insisted that “the subs had changed the game today”.
