THE CHAMPIONSHIP

September at the top level had the lot — big saves, bigger screams, and a few touchline ding-dongs. I’ve watched it, heard it, and argued about it. So here it is: my Championship XI for September. Some you’ll love, some you’ll loathe. That’s the point.

Now, don’t expect everyone to nod along. These are my choices for the Premier League Team of the Month. Some you’ll agree with, others will have you spitting out your tea. That’s the beauty of it — controversy keeps the league alive.

The Fortress: Goalkeeper and Defence 🛡️

Our back three, plus the man between the sticks, have been nothing short of immense, keeping crucial clean sheets and showing incredible leadership.

• 🧤 Rory Burns (Woodbank FC): Our undisputed No. 1. Burns has been a wall, pulling off saves that frankly defy physics. He’s the reason Woodbank FC bagged those vital points—a true Guardian of the Goal.

• ⚽ Ryan Whiteside (Third Lanark AFC): A classic, reliable defender. Whiteside reads the game like a novel and is always in the right place at the right time. A masterclass in defending simplicity.

• 🔥 David Logan (GCR): The engine room of the defence. Logan brings the fire and passion, with crunching tackles and a relentless drive to win the ball back. Opponents think twice about running at him!

• ⚡ Finlay McPherson (Kings Park United): Pure speed and energy down the flank. McPherson is the modern full-back—quick in recovery and a constant attacking threat. His runs have been electrifying.

The Engine Room: Midfielders ⚙️

This is where the magic happens! Our midfield quintet has controlled the tempo, unlocked defences, and provided the steel needed to win the central battle.

• 🎯 Scott Sneddon (Woodbank FC): Precision personified. Sneddon is the kind of player who can thread a pass through the eye of a needle. His assists have been right on the money—a true playmaker.

• ⚡ Morgan Sechaud (Busby AFC): Another injection of pace. Sechaud’s ability to transition defence into attack in a flash has been key. He’s simply too fast for most opponents!

• 🎩 Tahir Bhatti (Glasgow Ansar): The magician of the team. Give Bhatti the ball and watch him weave some gold. His close control and stunning vision make him a joy to watch.

• 🔥 David Connolly (Rhu Colts): All action and enthusiasm. Connolly’s work rate is phenomenal, covering every blade of grass. He brings the fire that ignites the whole team.

• 💪 Liam McGeachy (Southside United): The midfield powerhouse. McGeachy dominates the physical battles and protects the defence with serious intent. An absolute rock in the centre.

The Sharp End: Strikers 🗡️

In football, goals win games, and these two have been clinical, ruthless, and impossible to handle this month.

• ⚽ Scott Paton (Port Glasgow BC): Paton is the man for the big moments. If there’s a sniff of a chance, he’ll take it. A pure goalscorer whose instinct in the box is second to none.

• 🔥 Chris Smith (Netherton AFC): A player who plays with intensity and a burning desire to score. Smith’s movement and finishing have been scorching hot, netting some crucial goals for his side.

That’s the team! A big well done to all the selected players for their outstanding performances this month. They fully deserve their spots in Hugh Dunnit’s Team of the Month!

Who do you think was the biggest surprise inclusion, and who are you backing to make the list next month? Let me know in the comments below!

If you’re raging, good. If you’re nodding, better. Either way, the GCFA is bursting with players worth the petrol and the early alarm. See you at the railings next weekend — I’ll be the one pretending not to hear the complaints.
