Saturday’s win was a proud moment for Glasgow Islands — but anyone who knows Murdo will tell you his standards go far beyond one result. The team’s progress under his watch is no accident. It’s built on hard work, loyalty and genuine passion for the sport.
Truly respected figure of GCFA & amateur football.

The games against Park Sports are the biggest so it is a really good win. There’s no doubt they were a long way off full strength but it is the mark of a very good team that they can turn up with a scratch squad and still make life very difficult. We were near full strength so it would have been a bad sign if we couldn’t capitalise. Thankfully, we did.
What pleased you most about the performance?
We’ve made really promising additions to the squad and they showed up brilliantly. However, I can’t not mention a familiar name – Robin – who continues to amaze with the standards he reaches. His fitness, strength, skill and speed must be a nightmare to play against. He played a true captain’s part on Saturday.

Robin, Finlay, Drew, Zander were excellent. Jack made big saves when we needed him to, as always. Archie didn’t score, for a change, but still led the line extremely well. I’m glad to say nobody was below a 7.
We were very disappointed to be behind at half time so it was really important we got the next goal – that was massive.

What was the key turning point in the match?
Getting our noses in front soon after drawing level at 2-2 was a big moment. We didn’t really look back after that.

How does this result set you up for the weeks ahead?
Of course it is a big result and sets us up well going forward but, again, we need to be cognisant that next time we face Park Sports they’ll be determined to show what I have no doubt they are still capable of. We have set a standard in the last couple of weeks and any dropping off will be punished by plenty of the other teams in the league, too. It’s up to us to do everything we can to build on it.

Just a big congratulations – they’ve shown what they can do but the roving reporter hit the nail on the head last week: Glasgow Island are a match for anyone when the big players are in attendance so please do take that on board. No more holidays!

Murdo’s post-match reflections were thoughtful, balanced and full of quiet pride. His words carry weight because they come from years spent in the heart of the league, not above it.
A true GCFA stalwart — still setting the tone for what grassroots football should be.
