Third Lanark move on to the next round of the Scottish Cup 🏆 keeping alive the representation of GCFA & SPAFA clubs in the latter rounds of the competition.

It was a blustery afternoon at Toryglen Sports Centre, where Third Lanark claimed a narrow 1–0 victory over Southside United in a hard-fought clash dictated as much by the swirling wind as by either side’s finishing.

From the outset, conditions proved difficult. Third Lanark’s Hobbs, who was lively throughout, tried his luck early with a speculative effort from distance, but Southside keeper Whitelaw remained untroubled.

At the other end, Southside thought they had their moment when a deflected effort looped dangerously over the bar, only for Whitelaw to confidently punch clear from the ensuing corner.

Controversy followed soon after, with Third Lanark denied what looked a strong penalty shout.

Southside United almost capitalised through Adnan, but a superb last-ditch tackle from the Lanark defence kept the scoreline level.

The breakthrough came midway through the first half. Hobbs, once again at the heart of the action, swung in a teasing ball that deceived Whitelaw, flying into the net to hand Third Lanark a deserved lead. 1-0 Third Lanark !!

The Goal

Southside pressed hard for a response before the break, and a frantic spell saw them pepper the Lanark goal — a long-range strike was spilled, a follow-up saved brilliantly, and a third effort blazed over in quick succession.

The second half opened in scrappy fashion, with few clear chances and Southside’s McGeachey booked for a late challenge.

Late Challenge and a booking

Third Lanark gradually reasserted themselves, almost doubling their lead when Chrissy’s delivery from out wide was met by Gregor, who rattled the crossbar with a thunderous effort.

Gregor and Hobbs both continued to try their luck from distance, but neither could find the target.

Southside struggled to break down a resolute Third Lanark defence, with most of their chances falling straight into the keeper’s gloves.

McGeachey saw a late header comfortably held, while Neilly for Lanark tested Whitelaw once more, but the score remained unchanged.

In the end, Hobbs’ first-half strike was enough to separate the sides. Third Lanark held on to secure all three points, while Southside United were left ruing missed chances and the gusts that played havoc with their rhythm.
