It’s been just a couple of months since Queens Park SFC stepped into the GCFA Saturday morning setup, and already they’ve had their fair share of lessons and positives. From an opening-day win to testing themselves in national cups, the early part of their journey has been about adapting, competing, and showing they belong.

Their gaffer admits results haven’t always gone their way, but insists the performances and standards are encouraging enough to build from.

Queens Park SFC – Gaffer

How hard has it been starting Your new adventure and competing in the GCFA ?
Been a clear step up in standard but we expected that and it’s been very enjoyable to make that step. Played against some good teams and gave us a good idea of where we are. Don’t think we are far away from turning things around in terms of results but been enough encouraging performances to keep me happy.

What are the main differences between the GCFA, and the supporters league you guys played in before?
Supporters league being unaffiliated meant it was very casual in terms of organisation and fixture lists so that’s been the main difference. Been some excellent teams in that set up over the years who I think could have more than held their own at this level in my opinion.

Even though Saturday’s result in the West Of Scotland Cup didn’t go your way, what positives are you taking from the performance?
I thought we played very well in the first half and bossed possession against good opponents. We didn’t carve out enough clear chances but did hit the bar amongst other things and on another day could’ve been ahead in the game. In the second half Westerlands came out flying and scored three goals in ten minutes to take it away from us. Saw enough good things over the course of the game though so refusing to be downbeat about it.

How have the players responded to competing in national or regional cups so early in your journey — has it been worthwhile?
With a bye in the Scottish and a Glasgow game in the West I don’t think it’s been particularly meaningful that they’ve been early in the season to be honest. Would have probably preferred to have played more league fixtures by now but it is what it is.

What has been the most memorable match of the season so far?

Our only competitive win so far was the 6-2 against Bearsden in the opening league game so that would be the easy answer.

Think the 2-2 playoff against Netherton was more memorable though in terms of our performance. Dec’s team have shown since that they have something about them so to come so close to pipping them to a Championship place is a constant reminder to our boys of what they are capable of when everything comes together.

Looking ahead, what are your hopes for the rest of the season as you continue building the club?

Refusing to put any targets on league positions etc – all about improving as we go. I think if we can get a few of our long term injured players back and deal with some availability issues we have more than enough about us to have a very good season but all about doing that on the park.
