A Division Two clash in torrential rain, end-to-end football, and fiery challenges — referee Ryan McBride reflects on a soaking Sunday at Hillwood Park.

What was the most enjoyable part of refereeing this match — and how did you find the torrential rain that kicked in midway through the first half?

It was a good game as was a bit of a surprise with Strathclyde being the stronger of the teams at the start of the match when you look at the form is was surprising. The rain was horrendous never good in a game when you feel your t shirt sticking to your skin and your only a quarter way through the match.

Was there a moment — a goal, a challenge, or even a bit of sportsmanship — that, despite the conditions, summed up the spirit of Scottish amateur football for you.
Yeah there was 2 challenges straight after one another, the boy had come in a pace and won the ball and caught the boy after winning the ball but was a clean challenge as Strathclyde won the ball from the challenges kilpartick player made a similar challenge and they countered.

Any standout bit of skill, character, or respect from the players that deserves a mention?

The Strathclyde captains Jamie McNab was very respectful as well and the Kilpartick captain being very good with myself and showing respect throughout the game.

Looking back, how do you reflect on the match from the referee’s perspective?

I thought I did well although I know kilpatrick disagree with their social media post regarding the game.

I always find it funny how it’s always the team on the wrong side of the score that tell you or make comments about the referee having a bad performance and never the team that win the game.

Was this the worst weather you’ve refereed in — or have you seen even wilder conditions before?

No I’ve refereeing in more wild weather snowy pitches, hail stones etc it’s just Scottish weather 😂

Thanks to Ryan for sharing his thoughts — and for braving the rain to keep the game flowing 👏⚽

Since starting Referee Corner with Ryan, I’ve seen social media posts about his performances that were unfair and simply not correct. This feature shows referees love football too — and they deserve respect before, during, and after the game. Without them, there is no amateur football.
